First Commercial Limited (FCL) was created in 1998 to work primarily with Credit Lyonnais Securities
Asia and provide technical advice on the transformation and management of Asian banks following the Asian
financial crisis of 1997. The original mandate included contracts to provide asset management assistance
to Krung Thai Bank through 1999 and 2000. The Company also enjoyed contracts to provide consulting advice
to Krung Thai Bank and other regional banks on their banking operations and reengineering of the product
offering.
The firm was founded by Michael Rowan, who held a number of senior management roles at Westpac,
including five years as Chief Manager, Strategic Planning, for the bank’s international operations,
and John Vivian, formerly a general manager at Citibank. John is one of Australia’s foremost experts
on payments systems.
FCL subsequently expanded its consulting work and merchant banking activities across Asia, the Pacific
and in Australia. The firm uses a number of consultants either as employees or as contractors and who have
specialised skills and experience relevant to the focus of the particular assignment. FCL now enjoys a
reputation of having a fundamental understanding of the operations, technologies, rules and regulations
surrounding banking and finance and of being able to apply these to provide a practical solution to client
problems.
The firm has worked extensively with private and government owned banks and financial institutions in
Australia and across the Asia Pacific region. FCL has also worked for central banks in Asia and in the
Pacific as well as a number of superannuation entities and State Governments in Australia.
