Business process re-engineering (or BPR) is a systematic methodology that (if applied correctly)
assists companies to achieve the above outcomes.
During the last part of the twentieth century and the early part of the twenty-first century there
has been an increased focus on business process. This can be directly attributed to competition
and the desire of companies to seek new ways of competing.
In summary, BPR is used to closely examine the companies’ key processes on an “end to end” basis.
Initially the original processes are “mapped” and documented. All aspects of the chain are then
examined for their importance (in terms of the end customer goal) and efficiency. Solutions are then
workshopped and developed in a team environment. Finally the refined processes are implemented.
Effective BPR efforts usually show marked increase in productivity and system capacity. This inturn
delivers increased value to both the customer and the companies’ shareholders.
